The Hive stylists will be offering hair cutting services from 11 am - 7pm. The services will be offered for a $15 minimum donation to directly benefit sustainable practices around the world. 100% of the proceeds on June 20th will be donated to The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation in an effort to raise $20,000 to plant fruit trees in Mozambique, Africa.

The For Wizards line by Davines has expanded! We welcome the two newest additions to our favorite styling line: No. 13 & No. 14

No. 14 is a Sea Salt Primer. It's a marine salt based styling spray that gives hair fullness, body, and texture. It has a slight amount of control for blowouts or air dried styles. It leaves your hair reminicent of that just-left-the-beach hair feeling. It has a dry texture and can be applied on wet or dry hair. Apply to the roots for lift or work through the ends with your hands for added natural wave. It smells fantastic.

No. 13 is a Mat Forming Ground. It works as a clay paste with a matt finish and extra-strong hold. It's excellent for giving the hair structure or body and is easy to control. It's key for rough or ultra-textured short styles. It's made with minerals found in clay to achieve the dry, matt look. To use, apply to dry hair and shape and scult into your desired look.

After hosting many successful shows since the opening, this 2 year Anniversary show features more than a handful of originals by bleach artist Will Koffman, an Illustrator and Fine Artist based in Orange County California. He is a Laguna Festival of Arts Exhibitor and has illustrated for Weird tales, Groove Kings, Dolphin City and The Newport Beach Film Festival.

Please come out dressed All-in-Black as we celebrate one-of-a-kind artwork with Mr. Koffman, the Halloween season and our friendly Silver Lake neighborhood.

Ramona Kama, one of our new stylists at the Hive, makes awesome and gorgeous feather hair pieces. She hand picks each feather and creates a work of art. The feathers are hand dipped in various colors or left in their natural state. The pieces work much like hair extensions and are attached to a small section of hair. They can be wet, shampooed, styled, etc. They last for months, too! She does the feather extensions Wednesday through Saturday so make sure to make an appointment or just stop by to see her awesome creations! The feathers are great for all ages and are easy to manage even for children. They're suitable for short or long term wear and look awesome during any occasion. In combination with the eco-oriented organization, Matter of Trust, The Hive Los Angeles was able to contribute to the ongoing oil clean-up crisis in the South.

Since becoming a business, The Hive has been recycling hair through this generous organization. They use hair clippings from salons, groomers, etc to create 'hair mats' which can be used effectively to soak up oil. They're a helpful tool made from a product that is readily available (since everyone gets their hair cut) and they're reusable. To read more about the organization please check out their website:

Over the months it has been difficult to get hair to Matter of Trust, but now with the increased demand due to the oil spill and people opening up their homes in the Southern U.S., we were able to donate the 36 pounds of hair that was collected over the past year. If you've had your haircut at The Hive in the past year, your hair was donated to cleaning up this devastating spill. So thank you!

We are still collecting and donating hair, but we're also in the market for used nylon (washed and ripped is fine). Nylon is also a key component in creating these hair mats. If you have any unwanted nylon, please feel free to drop if off at the Hive any time or at your next hair visit!

Hailing Sunset Blvd. from the Mi Alma gardens, locals The Cigarette Bums kick off the jams for what will inevitably be a night to remember. Our good friends from The Downtown Train follow with brass, string, percussion and the mic encouraging the night to fall and crowd to boogie.

The indie folk-French pop group, Verb the Adjective Noun sends Sunset into the night, across Myra and over to El Cid where Kate Durbin, Marianne Sierk and a talented few orate and gyrate the crowd. The Spider Problem noticed while passing through the Blue Jungle last visited after the Health Club where encountered the Manhattan Murder Mystery, a margarita and tapas bar. Who woulda thought?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The first day of spring is this Saturday and in honor of new growth and the planet, we would like to suggest ways to reduce and reuse with your hair care product packaging. At the Hive we carry a product line called Davines. Davines is a very Earth friendly line that contributes to and protects forest reserves in Costa Rica as a way to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Davines Essential line is completely carbon neutral due to donations and protection of over 6 million square feet of green area.

The Essential line uses significantly less plastic than most product companies in an extra effort to conserve. Here at the Hive, we refill any empty & clean Essential Shampoo and Conditioner containers for 10% off their regular price. This way less packaging has to be created and you can save money by eliminating the price of the product's container.

It's the beginning of March and we hope everyone finds they had a wonderful February. We wanted to share the best part of ours with everyone: the pie!
On Valentine's Day we hosted a pie making/eating contest in combination with an art show and had a great time. The winner of the pie making contest was Zell Dragonette with her Chocolate meringue with ginger crust. Second place was Sebastian Marlow's Oreo pie and third went to Brandi Brown's Pear pie with walnut crust. They were all delicious! The winner of the pie eating contest was Elana Hill and to her credit the only girl in the competition! Go Elana!

Effortless Great Hair by Isadora McKenna

Most people that come in for haircuts once or twice a year, come in with their ends thrashed and thirsty for nutrition and structure/shape. Whether your hair is natural and long, growing out longer, or frequently colored or highlighted, the most important thing is keeping your hair in great condition.

When your hair is manageable, it looks and feels softer, smoother and shinier!

Trim

Trimming the ends (even if only a little bit) will give them a solid edge that can continue to grow out healthy.

Otherwise, the hair gets scraggly and splits up the strand - in which case, you're never actually gaining any noticeable length!

In our next series of hairstylists interviews, Sal Lozano, stylist at our shop, The Hive Los Angeles, works with a curly hair client desperate for change.

The consultation

Mandy (the name is changed for privacy) arrived at The Hive Los Angeles with the common fear of a past experience, taking curly locks to a shorter length, or as I advise, giving it life. Mandy mentioned that she's "desperately wanting a change but is afraid of one". In our conversation the truth comes out,

Mandy's recent cut, taking the length up, resulted in an unwanted bell-shape and too short.

Textured hair does spring up, understanding how much depending on the curl is key. I assured Mandy, after a season of growth and loss of moisture(since the last cut),

it's time to Reshape, Revamp, and Restart for the Fall/Winter season.

So I say. "lets create a cut that's fitting for your texture and your lifestyle".

The Cut

A textured (curls) bob length - above the shoulders below the chin line. To avoid the bell shape and create an ideal contained fluid form, we begin by countering the head's natural shape. We start by building soft graduation from front to mid ear area and seamlessly continue into mid area with free loose layers.

Now with the same fluidity we re-establish graduation into the back for a beautiful visual lift.

Never fear a natural healthy curl.

For playful movement add twist cutting and free hand finishing techniques. The use of one's bone structure and natural texture is what creates an ideal form and easy to manage haircut.

*Styling tip: To prevent flyaway strands or the frizzy look (Yes it can be avoided!) start with a light spray of liquid leave-in conditioner like Davines Dede-mist. A soft mousse can now be worked in, place a puff into the palms of the hands and without fear rework the curls back into life. A soft squeeze up and a gentle release down.

**to dry: Either let air dry or diffuse dry for a natural look or a stylish finish, you decide. Definitely shy away from flipping your hair upside down, as this will produce the unwanted frizzy look.

**Keeping individual strands wrapped around larger curls is the secret.

The Maintenance and Care

When all is said and done, a great look can be maintained outside of the salon if the knowledge of how is shared.

So here's my advise: Care for thirsty curls with a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner such as Davines ( I love this stuff) Love or Momo, depending on the thickness or fineness of your hair. Don't be afraid to ask our stylists at the shop!

Gently towel dry to style and use a dollop of Momo Leave-in Conditioner. Spread the conditioner onto hands as you would hand lotion and, from roots to ends, rake into hair. Avoid plastering product onto hair. The moisture will liven and soften the curls throughout the day.

Dry as desired and enojoy all the compliments that pour your way...

The Result

Mandy's coy smile told of a past now forgotten and the beginning of a joyful and sexy-hair future. With a modern revision of a timeless classic, the curls and heavy long length that previously only laid there, now turns into Confidence.

The unveiling party for Apiary Gallery was a great success, thanks to all who attended! Our collection of local honey bee art will be displayed at the gallery for the next several weeks. Stop by if you haven't had a chance to see it!

Also, we are still selling Honey Bee headbands made by Trouble & Trifle. All proceeds of headband sales are going towards planting a garden in the back of our building to bring more bees back to the Silverlake neighborhood.

Also still for sale are jars of local Silverlake honey. Each jar is selling for $30 and with each purchase a bee hive will be donated in your name to a family in need around the world through Heifer International.

Q & A pre-view with Brendan Constantine;

David Shook(The Hive poet-laureate): People are always down on the LA poetry scene, comparing it to the busyness of New York and Chicago. Is that fair?

BC: I have traveled extensively throughout the US and Europe and I have yet to discover an arts community that doesn’t want or need help. Poetry readings in Chicago and New York may enjoy grater attendance on the whole, but ask the host about the health of the series and he or she will tell you it’s a struggle. If there is anything special about LA’s case I would have to say it isn’t a problem specific to its desire for poetry. Los Angeles is distinguished from every other major city by virtue of its incredible size. LA is isolated from itself by huge distances and a feeble transit system. Our theater, dance, music and art scenes exists as islands. Manhattan or Chicago can still be crossed by train in fifteen minutes for two dollars. Under the circumstances, I think we’re doing pretty good!

DS: Who’s who when it comes to up-and-coming LA poets?

BC: I’m quite fond of Neil Aitken, editor of The Boxcar Poetry Review and author of The Lost Country of Sight, which took the Philip Levine Prize for 2008. I think he’s a gifted poet. I’m quite honored to share a press with both Douglas Kearney and Jamey Hecht. Kearney’s Fear, Some and Hecht’s Limousine Midnight Blue are exciting books that make me want to write. Also, I must add Sarah Maclay to the list, a brilliant poet who is long overdue for a national holiday or commemorative stamp. Her last book The White Bride is hypnotic.

DS: Your new collection, Letters to Guns, contains several poems that are letters to guns. —That makes sense, right?— They’re among my favorites in the book, and I wondered if you have written more than the eight that appear in the book.

BC: None that were finished. There were a few false starts, poems that derailed themselves by becoming polemic. For instance, there was one set in the middle east , and another during the second world war and I felt that these would too easily be mistaken for opinions on political issues. In all of the letters I have tried to write about something nationless.

DS: There’s more to the idea of the letters. In your introduction you write that the letters are indeed actual letters. In the past I’ve written false translations, to allow a distance from the speakers’ voices that I feel simple dramatic monologues—at least as we’ve been taught to interpret them—don’t permit. Why do you present your letters as real letters? I guess I’m as interested in the psychology behind it as well as any thoughts you might have about the I-speaker of lyric poetry.

BC: I wrote the first letter after having stumbled upon the website for Guns Magazine. The classifieds section was (at the time anyway) called Letters To Guns, and for a moment, I really thought people were writing to guns! Indeed, I liked believing it. At first.

As the idea took shape as a means for poetry, a number of possibilities presented themselves and many of them seemed fraught with risk. Particularly the risk of self-righteousness. For instance, if one decided to write a few such letters, how soon would it be before one were compelled to write a letter in the voice of a shooting victim? What kind of an oaf, luxuriant enough to be able to write in the first place, presumes to speak for the suffering? And who, in a time of actual war, has the heart to read such a letter? Personally I can’t stand art as an excuse for finger-wagging. Even if I share the speaker’s outrage, the experience is always boring.

However, if I imagined the voices of Things -- trees or clothes or silverware-- and made them my speakers, poetry might emerge free of any moral agenda. Furthermore, by presenting a collection of such letters with the assertion that they were real - a completely ridiculous demand of the audience - the reader might let down their guard long enough for me to get ‘personal.’

DS: You’ve got a lot of earrings. What’s up with that? How important is it in poetry to be a badass?

BC: It could not be less important. Honestly I am about as threatening as a fistful of schwarma.

Charles Renn: Living in Los Feliz, East Hollywood, what draws you to the neighborhood and if anything, what more can be done to promote local literary talent?

BC: I am Hollywood born and raised! As to what can be done to raise awareness of our artists, I think...well... I think success is the child of audacity. I mentioned before that Los Angeles is a city isolated from itself. I think the ‘scene’ that seeks communion, that makes an effort to reach out to other groups, becomes the heart of all groups. For instance, if a writers group in Los Feliz created an event for the poets of Venice Beach or Leimert Park, if we had an annual visit from the poets of OC and in turn were able to get Beyond Baroque (Venice), The World Stage (LP) and The Ugly Mug (OC) to return the favor, we would extend our audiences enormously.

We can’t just print flyers and shout online. We must, we must, we must fill seats for each other. If we are not responsible for the excitement, then we are complicit in the boredom.

If there is a local artists you enjoy, you need to say so, to do the work of saying so. Otherwise, we’re all just noises in our apartments.

Extinct: Endanger is the first solo original exhibition at The Hive Los Angeles, a hair shop and art gallery, in Silver Lake from local Los Angeles based artist and animator, Daisy Church. Her first major solo exhibit features an array of paintings on wood panels, transforming the gallery into a museum- like setting exploring the idea of beauty, exoticism and rarity.

Extinct: Endanger from Daisy Church

This show is a series of paintings on wood panels that explore the fleeting themes of life, beauty and the natural world. The impact that humans have had on our surrounding natural environment drives the juxtaposition between endangered and recently extinct animals with female forms, each reflecting the culture and geography that surrounds each animal. Each painting appears to be a museum diorama, freezing both the human and the animal in a frozen display of art, science, and historic reflection.

Daisy Church (born 1979 in Wilmington, Delaware), moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in art and animation. She attended Carnegie Mellon University and received a BFA in Fine Arts, after which she moved to Los Angeles, where she completed a MFA in Animation and Digital Arts at the University of Southern California. While at Carnegie Mellon, she developed a love and passion for painting, which she continues to pursue in addition to her career in animation. As an animator, she has completed multiple independent films, and has worked commercially on several animated programs for film and television.

Animals and the female form are recurring themes throughout Daisy's work. She is an active member of the Los Angeles based art collective, Girls Drawin' Girls, and has been most recently seen showing her work in group shows throughout the Los Angeles art scene. She currently resides in Silver Lake, Los Angeles.

Tia is a seasoned salon receptionist/manager and singing talent. Moving from a full service salon in Sacramento, where she helped the owner build the shop from the ground up, to Los Angeles, we are excited to develop our business with an experienced point-of-view and more than happy to welcome her talents.

Isadora has been a stylist in Los Angeles since 2004. While living in LA she has worked freelance in fashion, film, and television for names like Alanis Morissette, Ipod interactive media, and Miguel Torres. After working in a local Davines Silver Lake salon for some time, she was drawn to the aesthetic of The Hive where we expect great things and look forward to growing with her creativity.

As well, Liz Kent will be taking time away to visit family in Massachusetts and is expected to come back to The Hive when in town. (June to be her next visit.)
